Overview of ADC

ADC (Australian Dental Council) is an autonomous non-profit organisation formed in 1993 and has been appointed by the Dental Board of Australia as an independent authority for dental professional in Australia (DBA). One of its main functions is to assess the knowledge, clinical and professional skills of internationally trained dental health practitioners who urge to register themselves with DBA in order to commence their practice in Australia. So, any dentist who has acquired his/her degree from a country other than Australia, ADC is the sole way to get the much needed commendation to work in Australia as a legal dentist.

 

Eligibility Cretiria

The ADC examination is available only to:

General Dentists who:

  • Hold a degree or diploma obtained after at least 4 years full-time academic study at an acknowledged university or appropriate qualification.
  • Have held full and unrestricted registration/license in his/her country or country of training and there is no withdrawal of registration.

Dental hygienist and/or Dental Therapist who:

  • Hold a dental hygiene and/or dental therapy qualification which are obtained after at least 2 years of full-time academic study.
  • Have held full and unrestricted registration/license in his/her country or country of training and there is no withdrawal of registration.

 

Examination Procedure:

STEP-1:
The first step involves the verification of all qualifications, certificates, work experience, registration history and other legal documents by Australian Dental Council (ADC) to establish your eligibility to further proceed with the examinations.
STEP-2:
Overseas trained dental practitioners must successfully complete either of the following English Language Tests with some specific minimum requirements:

  • The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) academic with a minimum band of 7 in each of the 4 modules (Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking); or
  • The Occupational Test of English (OET) with grades B or above in each of the 4 modules (Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking).

STEP-3:
Some highlighting points of the ADC written examination are:

  • It constitutes of 4 papers containing scenario-based and single-answer Multiple-choice questions (MCQ).
  • Exam is held twice a year in the months of March and September.
  • The Exam is conducted in two days:
    • 1st day: 80 MCQ’s + 3 SAQ’s.
    • 2nd day: 80 MCQ’s.
  • There are separate Written Examinations for Dental Hygiene, Dental Therapy and combined Dental Hygiene/Therapy candidates.
  • The questions in the paper will focus on a number of disciplines listed in the table below:

STEP-4:
In order to be eligible to sit for the Final Examination, at the closing date for the exam you must have passed the written Examination and have a satisfactory pass in the OET. The Final Examination is held over a full clinical week. It is designed to test the clinical competence of the candidate in terms of dental knowledge. The examination is conducted only in Australia at different venues on different dates throughout the year.

 

ADC Certificate

An ADC Certificate is issued upon successful completion of the ADC examination procedure. The ADC Certificate entitles you to apply for registration with any of the Australian Dental Boards.
